PDM Course Descriptions

Required Courses

Completion of each of the following courses is required for the PDM certificate program.  All four courses are offered online as well as at DMAI educational events throughout the year.

Communications in Destination Management (1 credit)
Communication activities encompass all aspects of DMO business, including publicity,
community relations, member communications, crisis communications, government relations, internal communications and marketing support. Examine the significance, the mechanics and the value of effective communications. Whether you are a small organization or a large one, effective communication is a requisite.

Destination Marketing (1 credit)
Marketing is the principal function and mission of DMOs. Traditional marketing is characterized by consumer research, price, product development, packaging, distribution, promotion, advertising and point of sale. This course examines traditional disciplines, as well as new marketing approaches and tools to build a truly integrated marketing campaign for your destination.

Destination Product Development (1 credit)
Every sales person needs a product to sell. Destinations— like products in every other industry—have a life cycle of change. This course examines product life cycle and how a contemporary DMO facilitates the development of destination attractions. Learn about “placemaking,” creating products from available resources, community visioning and the relationship that product development has with the Futures Study and DMO accreditation.

Information Technology for Destination Management (1 credit)
Look at key destination marketing technology, including how to use a destination Web site as the “24-7” representation of the DMO. Discuss how to adapt technology concepts to the destination marketing/CVB environment; plus, review content management and customer relation management best practices.

Recommended Course

Fundamentals of Destination Management & Marketing Course (1.5 credits)
Highly recommended for students and professionals new to the industry because it provides important information and interactive discussion on DMOs, the practice of destination management/marketing and DMAI membership benefit opportunities. This course is offered at DMAI’s Annual Convention and Destination Management & Marketing Institute, both events at which certificate candidates can attend additional PDM required courses and be on their way to professional achievement! Participants receive the textbook Fundamentals of Destination Management & Marketing.
